Liberty Bell Award Recipients

The Law Day Committee of the Bar Association of Lehigh County presents the “Liberty Bell Award” to one deserving recipient. Past recipients of the Bar Association of Lehigh County LIBERTY BELL AWARD have included:

1995: The Hon. Donald E. Wieand, Judge of the Superior Court of Pennsylvania

1996: Mr. Stefan Presser, Esquire, Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania

1997: The Hon. Stephen J. McEwen, Jr., President Judge of the Superior Court of Pennsylvania

1998: Mr. Richard J. Makoul, Esquire [posthumous], renowned criminal defense lawyer, regarded by many as “the conscience of defense lawyers”

1999: The Hon. Edward N. Cahn, former Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania

2000: The Hon. James Knoll Gardner, President Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania

2001: The Hon. Arnold C. Rapoport, Magistrate Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania

2002: The Hon. Robert A. Freedberg, President Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Northampton County, Pennsylvania

2003: The Hon. William H. Platt, President Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania

2004: The Hon. Franklin S. Van Antwerpen, Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania

2005: The Bar Association of Lehigh County, celebrating 100 Years of Service to the Community and the Profession

2006: The Hon. Madaline Palladino, Judge of the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania.

2007: Ms. Marianne Canning, Former Executive Director of the Bar Association of Lehigh County, celebrating over 20+ years of service.

Liberty Bell Award Criteria

Honor a leader in their community for contributing to the promotion of freedom under the law.

Criteria

  • Encourages a greater respect for law and the courts
  • Promote a better understanding of our Constitution and the Bill of Rights
  • Contributes to the effective functioning of our institutions of government
  • Fosters a better understanding and appreciation of the rule of law in the community
  • Stimulates a deeper sense of individual responsibility so that citizens recognize their rights.

  • Persons seeking elective office are ineligible
  • Previous recipients are ineligible
